Advanced Lessons

Ready for the next stage in your driving?  Want to learn more about how you can use the speed and power of your car to make good progress whilst still staying safe and legal?  Perhaps you want to go on to take one of the advanced driver qualifications?  Then we can help.

Advanced driving is defined as: "Advanced driving is the ability to control the position and speed of the vehicle safely, systematically and smoothly, using road and traffic conditions to progress unobtrusively with skill and responsibility. This skill requires a positive but courteous attitude and a high standard of driving competence based on concentration, effective all round observation, anticipation, and planning. This must be co-ordinated with good handling skills. The vehicle will always be at the right speed with the correct gear engaged and can always be stopped safely on its own side of the road in the distance that can be seen to be clear." - DSA, RoADAR, IAM, 1997

Aspects like moving around in your side of the road to increase visibility and allow you to accelerate out of a bend earlier aren't taught to learners as it's too much for them to concentrate on.  For advanced driving, skills like these are taught as drivers can take on the extra aspects in addition to the normal driving and staying safe aspects that they do in normal driving.

Your instructor holds the RoSPA Gold which is described as "the highest civilian driving standard available and the holder will be a master of his or her art", as well as the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) Advanced Driver qualification, so you know that your instructor can practice what he preaches.  We've experience driving and owning a host of cars small 1 litre cars to 400bhp twin turbos; front, rear and 4x4 cars which all have their unique aspects that need handling differently.  Whatever car you have, we can help develop your skills to get the most from it whilst still staying safe.

Work Driving Assessment Training

If you have an assessment of your driving coming up at work then we can help you.  We can make an initial assessment of your driving as a whole, or focus on individual elements you are lacking confidence in and establish where your strengths are as well as where there are areas that can be refined.  We can then work closely with you to find the best method to make those refinements and build your confidence at the same time.

Driving Instructor (PDI/ADI) Training

advanced_adipdiIf you have decided for a new career as a driving instructor, we can help you on that path.  We're not looking to get you working for us paying large franchise fees, we will just help you with your training with a focus on getting you to pass your tests and become a good instructor.

Part 1 - Theory

Realistically, this is an area best studied on your own with the appropriate books, DVDs and online resources.  We can help guide you on what you need and in particular on the requirements around the Hazard Perception Test (HPT).

Part 2 - Your Advanced Driving Test

You are expected to drive to a very high standard in this extended driving test.  We can work with you to:

  • Refine your skills across all areas of your driving and all of the required manoeuvres
  • Get you out of any 'bad' habits that you will have inevitably picked up over the years of driving.
  • Ensure you're driving is an advanced version with all of the skills that you'll later be teaching to your pupils.

Part 3 - Testing Your Instructional Ability

You will need the skills to teach a real pupil with the examiner sitting in the back of the car.  The pass rate is relatively low on this test which often instils fear into people, but with the proper preparation we can ensure that you have all of the skills and ability needed to handle this test.  Fundamentally you need the skills to:

  • Plan the lesson effectively, focused on the needs of the pupil.
  • Keep everyone safe.  This comes from ensuring everyone knows their roles and responsibilities, linking into the effective lesson plan suited to the pupil's abilities.
  • Deliver an effective lesson, with the pupil learning and improving as appropriate.

All of the above need to be delivered not just at the beginning of the lesson, but throughout, adapting where required to the specific needs of the pupil, keeping everything client-centred around their needs.  There are various techniques, styles and skills that can be used, but it's about ensuring you deliver lessons that are based around the needs and development of the pupil and what works best for them.

We can help you build on the skills you learnt yourself in part 2, turn those into teaching those skills and apply that knowledge into appropriate preparation for your part 3 test alongside developing other skills to help keep your lessons focused around the needs of your client.

If this is a career that you want to pursue and would like our help, please give us a call here and we can discuss your needs in more detail.
